Treating Dry Eye

Is a Journey

Meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis are chronic ocular conditions. It can be challenging to diagnose the core issue causing your symptoms, and more challenging still to find the solution.

Dr. Neal is extensively experienced in caring for patients with dry eye disease. She’ll work with you to systematically uncover the causes of your discomfort, and determine the best technology, medication, lifestyle adjustments, or medical procedures to get you relief.

Your personalized plan may include treatments to provide symptom relief plus procedures for a long-term return to homeostasis—and comfort—in your eyes.

Our Treatments

Our mission is to help you see and feel your best. We truly want to find you relief and we’ll work hard to help get you there.

Dr. Neal may recommend some of the following treatments, medications, or procedures following your dry eye evaluation. Please don’t hesitate to ask her for more information throughout your appointment.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

The advanced OptiLight by Lumenis intense pulsed light treatment uses light energy to treat the root cause of many cases of dry eye.

OptiLight gently heats the thick oil clogging the meibomian glands to restore them back to their regular function. IPL also destroys abnormal blood vessels to reduce inflammation in the eyelid.

The iLux treatment helps diminish the symptoms of dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. It uses both gentle heat and gland expression to unclog the glands.

During the treatment, targeted light heats the eyelid margin to melt the thickened meibum oil blocking the meibomian glands from functioning. Next, gentle compressions help express the now-melted oil from the glands.

Once the glands are working correctly, the quality of your tears improves. We love iLux for mild to moderate cases of MGD, because it can help keep the condition from worsening.

Prokera targets the root cause of your dry eye symptoms by helping to heal and protect the damage and inflammation on the surface of the eye in moderate to severe cases.

Some people with dry eye have decreased sensation on the surface of their eyes. This means they may blink less, leading to further eye discomfort, worse dry eye symptoms, and potentially more damage.

Prokera is a bit like a bandage for the surface of the eye. It is absorbed by the body within a few days, and results are often felt within a few weeks.

For patients with severe dry eye due to meibomian gland blockages, Dr. Neal may recommend meibomian gland probing.

This procedure can effectively clear scar tissue and oil blockages in the meibomian glands. This allows the glands to heal and healthy oil to flow more freely, helping return homeostasis to your tear film and bringing relief to your eyes.

Lid margin debridement aids in the maintenance of good eyelid hygiene. Healthy eyelids are critical for a balanced tear film and proper eye lubrication.

Dr. Neal cleans the eyelid and eyelashes to remove dirt, debris, and bacteria, which can help reduce inflammation related to blepharitis.

Dr. Neal may prescribe a medicated eye drop, such as lifitegrast (Xiidra), Restasis, or Cequa, or a nasal spray called Tyrvaya that helps your body to make more of your own natural tears.

The way your workspace is set up, the amount of time you spend using screens, and your diet can all affect the comfort of your eyes. Dr. Neal can help you make adjustments and can recommend dry eye-specific omega-3 supplements that can help.
